All Complex Ecosystems Have Parasites

This is a great essay on trying to “solve” problems via restrictions on the market. It has the feel of one of those things I'll find myself citing over and over again, like Joel's Law of Leaky Abstractions.

  1. So assuming all complex systems must have parasites, should we just have to learn to accept them?

  2. The point of the article was that while you don't just have to throw up your hands and give up completely, if you try to fix the system so that parasites can't live in it, you usually wind up removing the very thing that made the system useful in the first place.

It's a case of "we had to destroy the village in order to save it."
